What Makes Pineapple so Special?

Pineapple is a tropical fruit that not only delights the taste buds but also offers several health benefits, especially when it comes to combating colds and flu.

Here are some of the key health benefits of pineapple during the cold and flu season:

  1. Rich in Vitamin C: Pineapple is a fantastic source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant known for its immune-boosting properties. Adequate vitamin C intake is crucial for the proper functioning of the immune system, helping the body defend itself against infections, including the common cold.
  2. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme with anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a natural response to infections, but excessive inflammation can contribute to cold and flu symptoms. Bromelain may help alleviate inflammation and reduce the severity of symptoms.
  3. Mucolytic Action: Bromelain in pineapple is also known to have mucolytic properties, meaning it can help break down and thin mucus. This can be particularly beneficial when dealing with respiratory conditions associated with colds and flu, as it may ease congestion and make breathing more comfortable.
  4. Hydration and Nutrient Support: Staying hydrated is essential during illness, and pineapple can contribute to your fluid intake. Additionally, pineapple provides essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals that support overall health, helping the body recover more efficiently.
  5. Digestive Aid: In traditional medicine, pineapple has been used to aid digestion. When you’re under the weather with a cold or flu, maintaining good digestion is important for nutrient absorption and overall well-being.
  6. Natural Sweetness and Palatability: During illness, appetite can diminish, making it challenging to consume necessary nutrients. Pineapple’s natural sweetness can make it more appealing and easier to include in the diet, ensuring you get vital nutrients even when you may not feel like eating.
  7. Boosts Overall Immunity: Regular consumption of pineapple can contribute to overall immune system health. The combination of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants supports the body’s ability to fend off infections and recover more quickly.

I prepare this pineapple juice in the winter to boost my defenses against colds and flu, or just to boost-immunity. My boys like their pineapple drink cold from the fridge, but I like to drink it hot since I love a cup of tea. Surprisingly, this drink works in either way.

When you experience cold and flu symptoms, it’s critical to up your zinc and vitamin C consumption.

The ingredients needed for this recipe:

In order to create this Homemade Pineapple Drink, you will need these natural ingredients:

100% Pineapple Juice : An excellent source of vitamin C

Ginger: The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in ginger can help soothe a sore throat.

Lemon: Lemons contain compounds with antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Bay leaves: Bay leaves are known to have respiratory benefits, potentially easing symptoms associated with colds.

Turmeric: Helps reduce inflammation in the body that is connected to frequent coughing and sneezing.

Cinnamon: Antioxidants included in cinnamon help in the prevention of infection and inflammation.

Peppercorn: Helps with the absorption of turmeric

How do I use it?

Adults: consume 250 ml of pineapple drink twice a day or 150 ml three times a day. Don’t go beyond the 500 ml daily limit.

Children under 12 years old: reduce the herbal mixture to 300ml (1cup) + 1 l Pineapple Juice and children should consume 150 ml of pineapple juice twice a day.

Additionally, I use This pineapple drink to help boost immunity throughout the cold months. All you have to do is reduce your intake to one 250 ml serving each day.

All bodies are unique, so some people may experience increased bowel movements.
